WinBox on Linux: Install MikroTik WinBox via Wine

WinBox has no native Linux build, but it runs reliably under Wine, a compatibility layer that lets Windows executables run on Linux without a full virtual machine.

Installing WinBox via Wine (Ubuntu/Debian Example)

sudo apt update
sudo apt install wine
wget https://download.mikrotik.com/routeros/winbox/winbox.exe
wine winbox.exe

For 64-bit systems needing the 64-bit build:

wget https://download.mikrotik.com/routeros/winbox/winbox64.exe
wine winbox64.exe

Using PlayOnLinux (GUI Alternative)

1. Install PlayOnLinux from your distro’s package manager or Flatpak.
2. Create a new virtual drive.
3. Install the downloaded WinBox .exe into that virtual drive.
4. Launch WinBox from the PlayOnLinux interface going forward.

PlayOnLinux is useful if you’d rather manage the Wine environment through a GUI than the terminal.

Fedora / Arch Notes

• Fedora: sudo dnf install wine
• Arch: sudo pacman -S wine

Common Issues

• Neighbor discovery not finding devices: Wine’s networking can be limited to the host’s default interface — connect via a direct IP if MAC discovery fails.
• Window scaling or DPI issues on HiDPI displays: set the WINEPREFIX scaling via winecfg, under the Graphics tab.
• Missing dependencies: run winetricks corefonts if text renders incorrectly.
