WinBox on Mac: How to Run MikroTik WinBox on macOS

WinBox is a Windows .exe application, and MikroTik does not publish a macOS build. To run it on a Mac, you need a Windows compatibility layer or a virtual machine.

Option 1: CrossOver (Wine-Based, Easiest)

1. Install CrossOver (paid, with a free trial) or plain Wine, free via Homebrew: brew install --cask wine-stable.
2. Download the WinBox .exe from the official MikroTik download page — see our WinBox download guide.
3. Right-click the .exe and open it with Wine/CrossOver.
4. WinBox launches in its own window as if running natively; connect to your router as usual.

Option 2: Windows Virtual Machine

1. Install Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, or the free UTM, which is Apple Silicon-friendly.
2. Set up a lightweight Windows 10/11 VM.
3. Download and run WinBox inside the VM.
4. Bridge the VM’s network adapter to your Mac’s physical network so WinBox can discover devices via MAC/IP on the same LAN.

This method is more resource-heavy but guarantees full compatibility, including MAC-address discovery, which can be flaky under Wine on some network configurations.

Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) Notes

• Wine on Apple Silicon runs via Rosetta 2 translation — functional but slightly slower to launch.
• UTM, which uses virtualization rather than emulation, gives near-native Windows VM performance on Apple Silicon and is the more reliable option for frequent use.

Troubleshooting

• Device not found in the Neighbors list: MAC-based discovery under Wine can fail due to sandboxed network access — connect by IP address instead once the router has one assigned.
• Fonts or UI rendering oddly: a common Wine quirk — try installing the corefonts Winetricks package.
